How It Works: From Shot to Milligrams

The calculator uses a straightforward proportion:

Total iron (mg) = drink volume (ml) × number of drinks × iron per 100 ml ÷ 100

For a single 250 ml vodka tonic with an iron value of 0.02 mg per 100 ml, the math is 250 × 0.02 ÷ 100 = 0.05 mg. Multiply by the number of drinks you enter, then divide by your chosen daily iron target to get the percentage of daily value.

The iron-per-100 ml figures are estimates based on typical cocktail proportions and USDA FoodData Central reference values for vodka, tomato juice, orange juice, cranberry juice, tonic water, and soda water. You drink two Bloody Marys, each 250 ml. At 0.25 mg per 100 ml, each drink provides 250 × 0.25 ÷ 100 = 0.625 mg. Two drinks give 1.25 mg. For an adult woman with an 18 mg target, that is 1.25 ÷ 18 × 100 = 6.9% of the day's iron. It will not replace a meal, but it is not completely negligible.

Example 2: Nightcap Vodka Tonic
One 250 ml vodka tonic at 0.02 mg per 100 ml contains 250 × 0.02 ÷ 100 = 0.05 mg. Against an adult male target of 8 mg, that is only 0.6%. Nutritionally, it behaves like the vodka itself: essentially iron-free.

Common Misconceptions

  • “Vodka contains iron.” Distilled spirits contain only trace minerals. A standard shot of 80-proof vodka provides roughly 0.004 mg iron, which is below the rounding threshold on nutrition labels.
  • “Clear drinks have no nutritional impact.” The mixer is the main character. A screwdriver made with real orange juice contributes measurable iron, vitamin C, and potassium, while vodka and soda contributes almost nothing.
  • “Dark or red mixers always mean more iron.” Not necessarily. Cola and many red syrups are very low in iron, while tomato juice is genuinely higher. Use the reference table instead of color clues.
  • “Alcohol can be your iron supplement.” It cannot. Regular heavy drinking can actually interfere with nutrient absorption and liver function, so it should never be used as a way to boost iron intake.

Pregnancy raises the target to 27 mg, and people following vegetarian or vegan diets may need up to 1.8 times the standard amount because plant iron is less bioavailable. Frequently Asked Questions

Can vodka help with anemia? No. Even several servings of plain vodka would provide far less than 0.1 mg of iron, while a typical iron supplement contains 15–65 mg. Iron-rich foods like lentils, spinach, red meat, and fortified cereals are the practical options.
