How the Calculation Works
The calculator uses MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task), a standard way to express the intensity of physical activities. One MET is roughly the energy you burn while sitting quietly. During rugby, your body works at 6 to 10 times that resting rate depending on the format and intensity.

Worked Example
An 85 kg player covers 6 km in a 70-minute club match. The MET value is 8.3.
Calories per minute = 8.3 × 3.5 × 85 ÷ 200 = 12.35 kcal/min
Total calories = 12.35 × 70 = 864 kcal
Calories per km = 864 ÷ 6 = 144 kcal/km
