How the Calories Are Calculated

This tool uses the standard metabolic equivalent (MET) approach from exercise physiology. One MET is roughly the energy you burn sitting quietly; an activity with a MET of 4 uses about four times that. The formula is:

Calories per minute = MET × 3.5 × body weight (kg) ÷ 200

Session calories = calories per minute × minutes traveled × trip multiplier

The 3.5 represents the average resting oxygen consumption of 3.5 mL of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute. The 200 converts that oxygen cost into kilocalories, assuming roughly 5 kcal are released per liter of oxygen consumed.
