How the MET Formula Works

The calculator uses metabolic equivalents, or METs, which express how many times more energy an activity requires than sitting at rest. One MET is roughly your resting energy expenditure, about 1 kcal per kilogram of body weight per hour. At 3 METs you are burning about three times as much as at rest; at 10 METs, about ten times as much.

The standard prediction formula used in applied exercise physiology is:

kcal per minute = MET × 3.5 × body weight in kg ÷ 200

The constants come from the classic relationship between oxygen consumption and energy expenditure: 1 MET equals about 3.5 ml of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute, and each liter of oxygen consumed releases roughly 5 kcal. Worked Examples

Example 1: Recreational disc golf. A 70 kg person plays a relaxed 18-hole round with plenty of walking for 45 minutes of active time. Using a MET of 3.5: kcal/min = 3.5 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200 = 4.29 kcal/min. Over 45 minutes that is about 4.29 × 45 = 193 kcal.
Example 2: Casual ultimate frisbee. A 60 kg (about 132 lb) player joins a pick-up ultimate game and is actively running for 30 minutes. At a casual MET of 8.0: kcal/min = 8.0 × 3.5 × 60 ÷ 200 = 8.4 kcal/min, so the total is 252 kcal.
