How to Use This Calculator
Start by entering your body weight in kilograms or pounds. The calculator converts everything to kilograms automatically, so you don't need to do any unit math. Next, set the duration — the default is 15 minutes to match the calculator name, but you can change it to 10, 20, or 30 minutes if your session is a different length.
Then choose the intensity level that best describes your deadlift session. If your training is mostly warm-up sets with lighter loads and longer rests, choose Light. If you are working in the 5-rep range with challenging weights, choose Moderate or Vigorous. For low-rep, near-maximal pulls with long recovery between sets, Max effort is the closest match. How It Works: The MET Formula
This calculator uses the standard metabolic equivalent (MET) method recommended by exercise physiologists. One MET is the energy you burn at rest — roughly 1 kcal per kilogram of body weight per hour. When you deadlift at a MET of 6, you burn about six times as much as you do sitting still.
The formula is:
Calories per minute = MET × 3.5 × weight (kg) ÷ 200
and then multiply by your total minutes. For a 70 kg person at 6 MET for 15 minutes: (6 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200) × 15 = 110.25 calories. The 3.5 and 200 are constants that convert the MET value into a per-minute estimate in calories, based on average oxygen consumption data.

Use actual body weight, not “training weight” with equipment. If you're comparing sessions across weeks, always use the same intensity label so the numbers stay consistent. For fat-loss tracking, remember that calories from a single 15-minute block are relatively small; what matters is the total energy balance across the week. Also, if your deadlift session is part of a longer workout with other exercises, this tool only estimates the time you actually spend pulling and setting up between reps — not the whole hour you spend in the gym.
Note: MET tables are population averages. Your real calorie burn may vary by 10–20% depending on muscle mass, lifting tempo, equipment (barbell vs. trap bar), and genetics. Treat the output as an estimate, not a precise metabolic measurement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my wearable give a higher number? Many heart-rate monitors overestimate strength-training energy because they interpret the rapid heart-rate spike from straining as steady-state cardio. The MET estimate here is more conservative and closer to laboratory-measured values for resistance exercise.
Does grip style matter? A mixed or hook grip doesn't meaningfully change calorie burn. Exercise selection matters far more than grip, as long as your effort and loading are similar.
