How the Math Works
The core formula is quite simple. Every candy type has an assigned sugar density, D, in grams of sugar per 100 g of candy. If your serving weighs W grams, the sugar content is:
Sugar (g) = W × D ÷ 100
From there, the calculator derives three more useful numbers:
- Teaspoons: one level teaspoon of granulated sugar weighs about 4.2 g, so divide sugar grams by 4.2. If your candy contains 21 g of sugar, that is exactly 5 teaspoons.
- Calories from sugar: every gram of sugar provides about 4 kcal. This is only the sugar portion of the candy, not the total calories from fat, protein, or other carbohydrates.
- % Daily Value: the FDA's Nutrition Facts label uses 50 g of added sugar per day as a reference for a 2,000-calorie diet, so the DV is sugar grams divided by 50, multiplied by 100.

Why do teaspoons differ from grams on a label? Labels list grams of sugar, not volume. One teaspoon of white granulated sugar weighs about 4.2 g, so the conversion is standard but approximate because different sugar types have slightly different densities.
Is all calories-from-sugar the same as total calories? No. Candy also contains calories from fat, protein, and other carbohydrates. Since nearly all candies are sugar-based, sugar calories are usually the majority, but chocolate and nut candies have significant fat calories too.
